Where is Alanya?
Located in the province of Antalya, Alanya resort town is a reference point for any tourist’s visit to Turkey. Located about 120 kilometers from the capital of the region, this beautiful city is able to delight even the most demanding tourist. Located in southern Turkey, the city has a population of about 250.000 inhabitants, 90% of them being Muslim, and the main occupations are in close relation with tourism, real estate, education and health. The city also hosts tens of thousands of Europeans, especially Germans and Danes, who have purchased, for relatively modest amounts, houses or apartments in this beautiful resort from the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean climate, the mountain scenery, the sights and the ancient citadel’s air attract over 1 million tourists annually, making Alanya one of the most popular towns near Antalya.
City’s history is linked to the strategic location in Alanya peninsula, which was known by Latins as Coracesium, the prominent city, and by the Byzantines as Kalonoros, the beautiful mountain. Around 1868 the city received the name of Alanya, under which is also known today. The port was never in its history placed in the top European ports, its economical importance being mediocre. Numerous buildings in the old town date from the eighteenth century and nineteenth century, being built during the period of Ottoman influence. The city has grown massively after 1960, the migration of rural population being massive, the investments in tourism making from Alanya an attraction for more and more Europeans.
In the city are located more than 80 luxury hotels, accommodation in the area not being a problem. The small fortress with Byzantine air delight visitors with its many objectives that date back to hundreds of years, with its Mediterranean city’s air and with its mild climate even in winter. Alanya is also a pole of the culture of Antalya, being the host of numerous annual cultural events, such as: Art and Tourism Festival, International Culture and Art Festival, Jazz Festival, etc. Tourism, the most significant industry in the area, makes of Alanya a region highly profitable, producing over one billion Euros annually. In the area, agriculture is also practiced, orange and lemon orchards, greenhouses with tomatoes and cucumbers, and banana plantations being the main sources of income for farmers. Although Alanya is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, fishing doesn’t take a leading position in the local industry.
Finding yourself in the area, it is worth to include on your list some of the most representative tourist objectives of the region. Almost every souvenir that you can buy in the area will depict the Red Tower, or Kizil Kule as it is called by the inhabitants. Located in the port, this fortification dates from the thirteenth century, the purpose of its construction being in close contact with the naval part of the city. With a height of about 33 meters, it represents the most impressive view of the citadel.
Alanya city offers to tourists the opportunity to make short cruises, fact which will allow you to admire the panorama of the citadel and the sea. If you choose this option, you will also be able to visit the Lovers Cave, place located in mountains at about 20 meters above sea level. The name of this cave derives from an ancient legend, according to which the love of those who will jump together from the cave entrance into water will last forever.
Another objective of interest is the Castle of Alanya, known by the locals as Alanya Kalesi, fortress located about 260 meters above the sea level, from where you will enjoy the landscape with Mediterranean flair of the citadel. Dating shortly before our era, the castle is surrounded by a strong fortress, on whose circumference watch towers for watchmen are located. Related to this place, over time, a story according to which prisoners got three chances to save their life has been told. If they would have managed to throw a stone in water from the highest peak of the fortress, they were absolved of any blame. This goal was hard tangible, their fate having been sealed even before, prisoners throwing themselves from the top of the hill. However, on your way to the citadel you will make a considerable effort, the high thermal comfort index being largely guilty for this.
Given the location of the city on the Mediterranean coast, Alanya city has become, since 2003, a major attraction for those who want to invest in real estate industry. Apartments businesses are very profitable for both parts, both real estate investors and buyers having benefits. The latter can even gain a European bargain, a luxury apartment with sea view, at about 60.000 Euros. Worthy of admiration is the local hospitality, the tourists being delighted by the received hosting. Whether you stay at the hotel, go cruising, make a tour of the area or go shopping at the bazaar, you will be greeted with a smile and you will enjoy the best possible treatment. And remember, the Turkish like the customers who haggle, so for any purchase you make, ??negotiate the price.
